The book I adore #2

正直、宗教的な意味は理解していなかったけれど、

子供の頃の私にとって、クリスマスはいつも楽しいシーズンでした。
この本もその思い出のうちの一つ。

長くつしたのピッピで知られるスウェーデンの児童文学作家、アストリッド・リンドグレーンによって書かれた
この愛らいい絵本（日本語訳版）を手に入れたのは、丁度この物語に出てくる女の子と同い年の7歳の時。

私はとにかくこの本の全てが大好きで、ストーリーは勿論、色彩豊かな挿絵、
どこか外国の少女の日常生活、小さな家のインテリア装飾、
（それが北欧と知ったのは大人になってから）
そしてクリスマスマーケットの景色にすっかり魅了されたのでした。（何年も経った今でも！）

未だクリスマスマーケットに行ったことが無い私。

是非いつか、出来ればこの本に出てくるような小さな街のマーケットに行ってみたいと、
クリスマスが来る度に思うのです。

To be honest, I didn't really understand the religious significance of Christmas, but it was a fun time when I was a little girl. 　

I received a picture book that was translated into Japanese when I was 7, the same age as the girl in the book. The cute little book was written by a Swedish writer, Astrid Lindgren (the author of "Pippi Longstocking"). 

I loved everything about this book. The story, the colorful pictures, the life of a little girl in a foreign country, and especially the decorations in her little Nordic house, the scenes of the Christmas Market....

They all fascinated me (Actually, they still fascinate me even now, many years later).
I have never been to a Christmas market, but I would love to visit one someday.

The book I adore.

この本のことを知ったのは、この本が私の本棚に収まるだいぶ前のこと。

数年前、私がガーデニングを始め（我が家には小さなベランダしかないけれど、
私はそれを「ガーデン」と呼ぶことにしている。だってその方が響きが良いから！）、
日記に植物や花のことを書いていた時、Ｓが、子供の頃彼の家にあったある本の話をしてくれた。

その本は1800年代後半から1900年代前半頃に生きていたある女性が、
美しいスケッチとともに身の回りの自然について書いた日記で、
S曰く、多分私が気に入るんじゃないかと。

残念なことに、Ｓがこの本のタイトルを覚えていなかったので、
ネットなどで調べることが出来ず・・・。

ところが翌年。
イギリスの小さな町の小さなチャリティーショップ（リサイクルショップ）を訪ねた時のこと、
なんとその店の本棚に、この本があるのをＳが発見。なんという偶然。

店番をしていたかわいらしいおばあちゃんに値段を尋ねると、「50ペンス」との答え。
ホントに！？　この美しい本になら10ポンドだって、いや、もっと払ったって構わないけれど・・・。
とにかく、私は50ペンスを払って、有難くこの本を持ち帰ったのでした。

この本の全てのページは彼女の手書き文字と水彩画がそのままプリントされていて、

彼女の日記を直接手にして読んでいるような感じ。

Ｓが言っていたとおり、スケッチや水彩画はとても美しくて見ていて飽くことがありません。

でも、この本で最も私が愛してやまないのが、まるで詩を書いているかのような彼女の文章。

彼女の言葉の選び方が素敵なのだよなぁ。

お絵描きは上手でない私だけれども、

自分の想いを彼女のような言葉で表現できたなら・・・。

I knew about this book before I got it in my bookshelf. 
A couple years ago, I started gardening, and I wrote about plants and flowers on my diary. (Even though we only have a tiny balcony, I still call it a "garden" because that sounds nicer!) That was when S told me about this book that his family used to have it when he was a child.

The book is a diary with beautiful drawing, written about a nature by a women who lived between late 1800's to early 1900's. S said I might like this book. Unfortunately, he didn't remember the title of the book, so we couldn't search it on the Internet or other ways.


However, following year, when we visited a tiny charity shop in a small town in England, S found this book from one of their bookshelves!  What a coincidence!"

I asked the lovely old lady at the counter how much it was, and she said "50 pence".
I thought "Really??" I wouldn't mind paying 10 pounds or even more to get this beautiful book!
Anyway, I paid 50 pence and received it with thanks.

About this book, all pages are printed as her own handwritten letters, and has got lots of watercolor paintings. It's like reading her original diary. As S told me, the drawings and the paintings are so beautiful, and I never get bored looking at them. However, the things I adore the most about this book is her writings. The way she keeps diary is almost like writing poems. I like her way of selecting words.


 I'm not a good painter, but it would be great if I could express my thought in words like her.
